Trade's End 04:35
Cocoa and dates, bottled beer stacked in crates Damn all the Waterways Board Coal by the ton for the old ironworks run Damn all the Waterways Board Drop all the paddles, fling wide the gates Damn all the Waterways Board There's a cargo to ship and it mustn't be late Damn all the Waterways Board Chorus: Damn'em to hell Sound out their death knell For we all can see trouble descending Hang'em up high Let the crows peck their eyes Damn'em to hell, the trade's ending The bottom's too close to the top we all say Damn all the Waterways Board The pound's full of shite and we scour it away Damn all the Waterways Board We ne'er got paid proper for our work in the war Damn all the Waterways Board Rations, low wages, still we are poor Damn all the Waterways Board The trade will be o'er, and the boats will be gone Damn all the Waterways Board And now in their place stinking lorries have come Damn all the Waterways Board Now the nossers and jossers and noddy boats cruise Damn all the Waterways Board They rev and they ram, and they're tanked up with booze Damn all the Waterways Board

Cropper Lads 03:16
Come Cropper lads of high reknown Who like to drink strong ale that's brown And strike each haughty tyrant down With hatchet, pike and gun. Chorus: Oh the Cropper lads for me And gallant lads they be With lusty stroke, the shear-frames broke The Cropper lads for me What though the Specials still advance And soldiers nightly round us prance The Cropper lads stil lead the dance With hatchet, pike and gun And night by night, when all is still And the moon is hid behind the hill We forward march to do our will With hatchet, pike and gun Great Enoch still shall lead the van Stop him who dares, stop him who can Press forward every gallant man With hatchet, pike and gun

Let Union Be 03:43
Come my lads, now let's be jolly Drive away dull melancholy For to grieve it is such folly When we're met together Chorus: Let union be in all our hearts And let our hearts be joined as one We'll end the day as we've begun We'll end it all in pleasure Rai folla rollarolla tooralaro Rai folla rollarolla tooralaro Rai folla rollarolla tooralaro When we're met together Grab the bottle as it passes Do not fail to fill your glasses Water drinkers are dull arses When we're met together Kings of old in all their glory Told their wives a different story In our cups we'll sing their glory When we're met together Eating and drinking, they're so charming Dancing and piping. there's no harm in All these things take great delight in When we're met together Cease from quarelling and fighting Evil speaking and backbiting None of these things take delight in When we're met together

Well, we are a ran-tan crew of folk Who like to get around Well we've played out in the country And we've busked it in the towns Well we like to drink our cider But what really makes us grin Is rolling up our muddy sleeves And going through your bins Chorus: Yes going through your bins my friends, We're going through your bins The useful tat that you throw out It really is a sin Recycle or reuse my friends No secret to success No need to ask, it's our life's task To rummage through your mess And we all once went to do the skips Twas at this time of year Oh so much food, the choicest wine Crates of the finest beer So much in such abundance Oh I truly could not speak The banquet ran for seven days, the party seven weeks And I built myself a mansion from old bottles and old bricks And I furnished it in finest style With stuff I found in skips It was so swish, so hip, so now Urbane and debonair That I swapped it for a pile of cash Now I'm a billionaire And it's naked greed and profit Drives consumption ever higher If you're feeling cold and empty Put the world on to your fire, FYAH! Well I started out with nothing Now I'm expert in my field And I can forage through a city Harvest all that will yield Where once we scraped as paupers We all celebrate as kings It's all from going round the back and going through your bins

about

I started recording this during the covid lockdowns of 2020. Some tracks from that time have already been released, and some I hung onto to release here. Solo work is often a thankless task, and trying to build a new project from scratch doubly so. It's a terrible cliché, but this is genuinely me making music for myself, and if anyone else likes it, well that's a bonus. Hence the erratic and random choices of material. It would no doubt have been better to present a consistent selection of English trad or steppas dub, but that's just not how my brain works. I blame rave, and the way it taught a generation to run two tunes in their heads at the same time.

released February 19, 2024

Everything written or arranged, performed, recorded, mixed and produced by myself at Mythern Hifi, except for invaluable guest contributions from Julie Forgues, Dom Elias, and James Tolhurst.

I took the cover photo of the bow of Harriett, the last surviving Kennet barge built in 1905 by Robbins, Lane and Pinnegar of Honeystreet, Pewsey, and beached at Purton on the Severn in 1964.

Huge thanks to:
The Towpath Singers for all the amazing sessions.
The Tea Trolley walkers for the regular unreality checks, expeditions, and being the best hiking crew out there.
Family for putting up with the noise.
You for listening.

about

Whistling Treason Bristol, UK

Dubplate-folk, Soundsystem Trad, Acoustic or Valve Powered, Global Confusion. Whatever I feel like.

As guitarist with RSVP Bhangra and Malarchy, I've played countless major festivals across Britain and Europe, including Glastonbury & Womad.

What started out as a strictly folk project has expanded wildly, to incorporate tunes from around the world, original compositions, and a whole lot of dub.
